I spent part of the other day talking to City officials, citizens, co-workers etc about this little coffee stand. It's not illegal to run a coffee stand like this; and to be quite honest I'm OK with these types of businesses. Everyone has a right to make a living (especially in this tough economy). People have also said it's no worse than is seen at the local YMCA pool, or down by the river (thank you Chris Farrely for that). It is because these are bathing suits, these are thongs and bras (and unless you are in the women's locker room, or Brazil (because I haven't seen that down by OUR river) it's DIFFERENT). What I am objecting to is the location of this particular place and the fact there is next to no discretion about it. It's a plastic bubble in a grocery store/strip mall parking lot. There is almost no way to NOT expose our children to it (it's on a street that's a major school bus route). Yes people have said just don't go there; yep that's one way to put pressure on them to close up shop. But if that's where you shop, or buy your pizza, paint or other goods how do you avoid it? If you are sitting in a long line of cars waiting for the train to pass how do you avoid it? You CAN'T. That's all I'm saying, let's put some pressure on them to tint the windows, put up some shades or MOVE to a proper location. Again live and let live, make a living selling your "hot" coffee, but don't expose our children to your wares.
An open letter to the MONROE CITY COUNCIL
Good morning, I would like to voice a complaint about the lack of decorum that is encompassing our town. While I understand the Mayor, CM Stima and others on the council feel "Governments job is NOT to dictate what businesses come to Monroe", I feel there is at least a duty to protect citizens from having to shield their children's eyes while driving down Main street. Seriously, is this part of our new city branding? I'd say that's a sense of adventure alright. Many of you have come out and publicly stated you are against strip clubs in our city, then how can we continue to let COFFEE stands open that have scantly clad baristas? This time they get to work in a completely see through bubble. At least Cowgirls has the decency to cover most of their stand with siding and signs. The new place is in a GROCERY store parking lot, are you kidding me! I am very concerned about the direction this city is heading in. I would also like to know if anyone is working on fixing this problem... especially during this ELECTION season? Sincerely, David St.Clair |
